Read Book Review by William Sockey

Wayfarers of Fate UK edition John Steinbacher’s Wayfarers of Fate is an immensely ambitious, encompassing sweep of the creative imagination.  It is a novel that drives to the heart of the terrible conflict that was the Spanish Civil War; a conflict which, although of seventy years ago, is still an integral part of the overall events that have formed our own modern world.  It was in many ways a practice run for World War Two.

Steinbacher uses an approach that embraces, among other elements, fantasy, and, with great effectiveness, metaphor; in fact, THE WHOLE BOOK IS A METAPHOR FOR THE HUMAN CONDITION.  It uses many different strands of reality to weave its texture; adventure, pathos, humor and philosophy.  Above all, it is the story of Pedro and Juan, and it is true to life; in that terrible war, many families were divided.

Steinbacher takes situations of extreme danger and courage and from them weaves a page turning adventure thriller combined with a sagacious historical commentary.  One of the fine points of this book is that it will prompt speculations such as these in the mind of the reader, and indeed they will very probably inspire that reader to look among other books dealing with the Spanish Civil War.

This DYNAMIC NARRATIVE wavers on the edge from time to time, piling so much on so much, but in the end, it is successful; it creates, and maintains, a strong and believable fictional world.

Wayfarers of fateIt is written with a hand that is both sure and light.  I PARTICULARLY LIKED THE WRITING; RIGHT FROM THE OUTSET, THE READER IS IMMEDIATELY ENGAGED, AND MADE A PART OF THE WORLD OF THE WRITER.

John SteinbacherAlthough not overly long, this book gives itself the space to develop fully its theme.  The narrative is relatively complex, but it is surely drafted, and nowhere loses its way.  It sustains itself, and flags nowhere.

STEINBAHCER’S WRITING IS EXUBERANT AND POWERFUL, AND WORKS PERFECTLY IN THIS ARENA.  HE ENJOYS A REMARKABLE LITERARY STYLE.

One gets the feeling that the author had as much excitement writing this POWERFUL novel as the reader will in the reading, and the writing style is clear, logical and elegant.  THIS ALL WORKS WELL TO CREATE IN THE READER THE WILLING SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF – THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF FICTION SINCE THE FIRST STORYTELLER UNROLLED HIS MAT IN THE MARKET SQUARE.

We believe that this important novel would find a readership as much in the UK as the US.
